In 1895, Giuseppe Nieri invested the revenues of the leather trade in the purchase of Fattoria Montellori. This first step marked the beginning of a tradition that would define the identity of the winery. The property included a cellar and land in the surrounding areas, laying the foundations for future development.
Mario Nieri, Giuseppe's son, expanded the company by acquiring additional land and introducing Sangiovese and Trebbiano vineyards, laying the foundations for a more structured viticulture.
With Giuseppe "Bepi" Nieri, Montellori transformed into a true agricultural company. In the 1950s, the first wines with the Montellori label were bottled, marking an epochal turning point. The winery was modernized with the introduction of cement tanks for fermentation, an important step towards improving quality.
In these years, vineyards of international varieties such as Chardonnay, Viognier, Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Sauvignon were planted. This innovation demonstrated a vision projected towards the future.
In 1981, the first vintage of Montellori Brut was bottled, a tribute to the passion for Champagne wines. The Podere del Montalbano, with its ideal soils, became the hub for the production of the Pas Dosè sparkling wine, introduced in 1982.
With Alessandro Nieri, Montellori embarked on a process of qualitative refinement. The introduction of an agronomist and an oenologist, along with the renovation of historic buildings, marked a new era for the company. The cellar expanded with a new pavilion dedicated to red wines.
Among the successes of this period are the first harvest of Moro in 1988, conceived as an accessible supertuscan, and Salamartano in 1992, a Bordeaux blend that still represents the excellence of Montellori. In 1995, Mandorlo was born, a white that celebrates the internationality of the cultivated varieties.
The 2000s marked a phase of consolidation and opening to new markets. 2001 saw the launch of Dicatum, a Sangiovese dedicated to Alessandro Nieri. In 2013, Pas Dosè Riserva was born, with fermentation on the lees for 60 months, a symbol of elegance and longevity.
In 2015, Montellori celebrated 120 years of activity, a milestone that testifies to the solidity and vision of the company. This anniversary consolidated the bond between the century-old tradition and the continuous desire for innovation. The following years saw the introduction of new challenges and opportunities: in 2015, the first harvest of Pinot Noir was collected, an important step in expanding the variety of wines produced, while in 2018, the first harvest of 60-year-old Trebbiano Viti was celebrated, a symbol of longevity and dedication to preserving the quality of the terroir.
Subsequent years have seen the introduction of new challenges and opportunities: in 2015 the first vintage of Pinot Nero was harvested, an important step in expanding the variety of wines produced, while 2018 saw the celebration of the first harvest of 60-year-old Trebbiano Viti, the archetype of the long life of all the estate's wines.
A journey through the vineyards and winery of Montellori reveals a land of history and tradition. The surrounding hills and villages provide an ideal setting for excellent wine production. Each visit tells of authentic flavors and roots.
